Same-day freight is a shipment picked up and delivered within the same calendar day, on a vehicle dispatched specifically for that load. Hot shot freight is the same idea applied to a single urgent shipment that cannot wait for scheduled capacity. OVN dispatches same-day and hot shot freight 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as the carrier of record on every load. OVN responds to a quote request in under 15 minutes and quotes with a van already identified in a network of over 1,300 OVN-qualified cargo vans across the United States including Alaska and Canada.
These three terms get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Knowing which one you actually need changes what you pay and what you get.
| Term | What it means | When it is the right call |
|---|---|---|
| Same-day freight | Picked up and delivered within the same calendar day, on a vehicle dispatched for that shipment alone. | The delivery has a deadline today and the distance is drivable within a single driver's hours. |
| Hot shot freight | A single urgent load dispatched immediately on the nearest available vehicle. The term comes from oilfield work, where a hot shot run carried one critical part out to a rig. Buyers now use it for any small, urgent, direct shipment. | One critical item has to move now and the vehicle should be whatever is closest and available. OVN runs hot shot freight on cargo vans. If your shipment needs a flatbed or a gooseneck, we will tell you rather than take the load. |
| Expedited freight | Any shipment moving faster than standard transit on a dedicated vehicle with direct routing. Same-day and hot shot are both types of expedited freight. | The shipment needs to beat standard transit, whether that means today, overnight, or in two days. |
| Next-flight-out | The shipment travels as air cargo on the next available commercial flight, with ground legs on both ends. | Long distances, generally beyond what one driver can cover in a day. Adds airport handling and cutoffs on both ends. For under ~600 miles a dedicated van is often faster door to door. |
There is no cutoff time. OVN dispatch is staffed in-house 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends, and holidays. A same-day request at 4 a.m. on a Sunday reaches a dispatcher who can act on it.
What limits a same-day delivery is not OVN's hours. It is the distance between the nearest qualified van and your pickup, plus the drive to the destination, measured against the hours remaining in the day. Send the two ZIP codes and dispatch will tell you whether same-day is achievable before you commit to it. If it is not, you will hear that instead of finding out at 11 p.m.
Expedite freight does not have a published tariff, because no two urgent moves are alike. A same-day rate is built from six things: the loaded miles, the deadhead miles between the nearest available van and your pickup, the time of day and day of week, the exclusive use of the vehicle, any wait time at pickup or delivery, and cross-border requirements where they apply.
Deadhead is the variable most buyers do not expect, and it is usually the largest one. A van 20 miles from your dock and a van 200 miles from your dock produce very different rates for the identical shipment. That is why network density matters more than fleet size on paper.
OVN quotes a firm rate in under 15 minutes, with the specific van identified before the number is sent. The rate you are quoted is the rate for capacity that already exists, not an estimate of what the load might cost once someone finds a truck.

Same-day and hot shot freight tends to be small, valuable, and attached to something expensive that has stopped. OVN moves theses shipments every day:
Aircraft on ground (AOG) parts and aviation components, including pickups straight from TSA pre-screening facilities to the plane.
Machine-down and production line components for manufacturing plants.
Automotive parts for assembly lines, dealerships, and repair shops.
Medical and pharmaceutical shipments, devices, and lab materials.
Aerospace and time-critical MRO parts.
Final-mile and deconsolidation moves for freight forwarders.
Recovery moves when another carrier has missed a window and the delivery date has not changed.
OVN is the carrier of record on every same-day and hot shot shipment it moves. OVN holds the contract, issues the invoice, and carries the liability. When a same-day move goes sideways, there is one company accountable and one number to call, and that number reaches a dispatcher rather than an answering service.
Tracking starts before the pickup. Most carriers begin tracking when the freight is loaded. OVN begins when the driver is still empty and en route to you, which on a same-day move is the number that actually matters. The tracking link can be white-labeled and shared with your own customer, and OVN also accepts MacroPoint, Trucker Tool, and Project 44.
Every van on this map is available to dispatch. When we quote you, one of them is already yours.

Same-day freight is a shipment picked up and delivered within the same calendar day, on a vehicle dispatched specifically for that load rather than a scheduled route. It is used when a delivery deadline falls inside the current business day and standard or overnight transit will not meet it. Same-day freight is a form of expedited freight and it typically moves on a cargo van or sprinter for shipments small enough to fit one.
Hot shot freight is a single urgent shipment dispatched immediately on the nearest available vehicle. The term comes from the oilfield industry, where a hot shot run carried one critical part out to a rig that had stopped. The difference from same-day is emphasis rather than definition: same-day describes the delivery window, and hot shot describes the urgency and the fact that one load is moving alone. In practice most hot shot moves are also same-day moves.
OVN responds to a quote request in under 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, and dispatches the nearest qualified van in a network of over 1,300 across North America. Actual pickup time depends on how far that van is from your facility. Because OVN identifies the specific vehicle before quoting, the pickup window you are given is based on a real van already en route, not an average.
It depends almost entirely on distance. Next-flight-out adds ground legs, airport handling, and flight cutoffs on both ends, which typically costs several hours regardless of flight time. Under ~600 miles, a dedicated cargo van driven straight through is often faster door to door and is not exposed to flight delays or cargo bumping. Beyond that range, air usually wins on transit time.
Same-day freight is priced per shipment rather than from a published tariff. The rate is built from the loaded miles, the deadhead miles between the nearest available van and the pickup, the time of day and day of week, the exclusive use of the vehicle, wait time at either end, and cross-border requirements where they apply. Deadhead is usually the largest variable, which is why a denser network produces lower rates. OVN returns a firm quote in under 15 minutes.
Yes. OVN has operated without a day off since 2015 and dispatch is staffed in-house 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Urgent freight does not keep business hours, and neither does OVN's dispatch floor.
The practical limit on a single-driver same-day move is set by federal hours-of-service rules, which cap driving time in a day, so the achievable distance depends on when the request comes in and how far the nearest van is from the pickup. Send the origin and destination ZIP codes to OVN dispatch and you will get a straight answer on whether same-day is achievable before you book, along with the next-fastest option if it is not.
